“Sergi started from the figurative realm, between expressionism and neorealism, in both fields, painting and sculpture (it is important to remember this, in view of the most recent experiments). But soon, in the further and essential stage of his journey, the autonomy of pictorial space imposed itself on him as a sort of vital field, a self-sufficient structure, a space governed and punctuated by parameters, tableaus, ‘fields’, surfaces endowed with chromatic vitality and static and dynamic laws of their own. At first (it is the restlessness of the artist who has left very few documents to survive), this space was arranged to welcome, incorporate rhythmic fragments of images, ‘pop’ emblems. But soon direct object allusiveness abandoned the field in favour of a pure ‘imprint’. In essence, the simple horizontal and vertical limits of the pictorial plane became a kind of pure environment evoking memory, remembrance, and then simple emotion; a sort, above all, of lunar ‘landscape’ vibrating with lights and shadows, formally related to one of the phases of that Italian experimentation master who was Corrado Cagli, but following a very different and autonomous conceptual process…”
